A stirred, spirit-forward cocktail often considered gin’s Manhattan ancestor. Balanced gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino and Angostura bitters, strained into a chilled coupe and finished with a lemon twist.

  1. Chill a coupe glass by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice water; leave the glass chilled and empty for serving.≈ 5 min
  2. Express a lemon twist over the drink to release oils, rub the peel on the rim, and drop the twist into the glass as garnish.≈ 1 min
  3. Measure and combine gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur and Angostura bitters into a mixing glass; fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (about 8 large cubes, enough to reach near the top).≈ 1 min
  4. Stir the mixing-glass mixture with the ice until the drink is well chilled and slightly diluted (about 30–45 seconds).≈ 1 min
  5. Quickly strain the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe glass.≈ 1 min
